The Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame Award is an excellent opportunity for recognition, and we encourage you to nominated an individual who has been an exceptional asset to our Torch Run program and the larger Torch Run community.
Whereas the Kenny Fields Award is intended to recognize the "Unsung Hero" of the Torch Run world, the Hall of Fame recognizes people who have demonstrated a sustained and significant contribution to the Torch Run and Special Olympics at the local, national, and international levels. The Hall of Fame is the most prestigious award given in the Virginia Torch Run community.
Please submit the attached nomination form and two letters of support. Nominations must be postmarked no later than April 15th, 2007. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Please send completed nomination forms and letters of support to:
Debbie Rooney-Apperson Special Olympics Virginia One Columbus Center, Suite 679 Virginia Beach, VA 23462 (757) 687-8183 (757) 687-8198, fax dapperson@specialolympicsva.org
Thank you!
Virginia Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics Hall of Fame Fact Sheet
PURPOSE: The Virginia Torch Run Hall of Fame was created to recognize outstanding individuals who have significantly contributed to the statewide success of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Virginia.
SELECTION: Nominations may be submitted by an individual, a department or a Special Olympian, or a Special Olympics employee. All nominations should include a completed nomination form that is provided in this packet and two (2) letters of recommendation from people who have worked with the nominee.
There may be up to five (5) inductees per year, to provide for the growing number of quality nominees. The decision as to the number less than five is determined by the Selection Committee.
CRITERIA: The nominee’s involvement must demonstrate a sustained and significant contribution to the achievement of the goals of the Law Enforcement Torch Run. The minimum requirements for this award are at least three (3) years of participation with the Torch Run, outstanding achievement in program development, organization and fund raising success.
PROCESS: Nomination forms must be postmarked no later than April 15th and sent to:
Debbie Rooney-Apperson Special Olympics Virginia One Columbus Center, Suite 679 Virginia Beach, VA 23462 (757) 687-8183 (757) 687-8198, fax dapperson@specialolympicsva.org
All nominations are then sent to the Virginia Hall of Fame Selection Committee. For year one, a committee chair will be appointed by the Virginia Torch Run Executive Council. Two (2) additional members of the committee shall be appointed by the Chair, from active participants in the Torch Run. Two (2) additional members of the committee shall be current members of the Virginia Torch Run Executive Council. The committee shall consist of five (5) members. Ties will be broken by the committee and only in the rarest of circumstances would a tie be allowed to stand.
The council has recommended that the Selection Committee consider weighting the criteria (see attached Recommended Criteria Weighting System). The nominator may choose to focus the nomination information accordingly.
Nominees that are not selected will remain in consideration for three (3) years, and will be considered automatically for this time period unless inducted. Supportive nominee information may be supplied each year. At the end of three (3) years, nominees’ files will be removed unless re-nominated.
All nominations or inductees will be kept confidential with inductees being announced at the Torch Run Kick-off in Richmond in May.
All nominees will receive a letter of recognition from the Chair of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee in honor of their nomination with a copy to the nominee’s agency.
